中国的歌剧、戏曲早在13世纪就有了。当时在宋元时期就产生了许多著名的戏曲,戏曲集中国民族艺术之大成,自宋元年间产生以来,先辈艺人艰苦创业,形成了以元代的杂剧、明代的昆曲、清代的京剧为代表的三大高峰。戏曲不仅只属于东方而且只属于中国,而中国的歌剧艺术也就是植根于中国戏曲的深厚的沃土。在20世纪时,中国的新文化运动为中国人走向世界、世界面向中国打开了大门,中国结束了长达二千年的封建王朝。国外的新事物新思潮扑面而来,深深地影响了当时中国的知识分子和文人墨客,新文学、小说、白话文、西洋乐器、西方的哲学、绘画、音乐纷纷踏上中国这个神秘的东方大国。使中国这个即将醒来的雄狮兴奋而迷茫,很多留学海外的人也以说一口流利的外语而洋洋
