Hecia plans to resume production of the Apex mine in the first quarter of 1990 and labor productivity is designed to be so high for a small, underground mine that uses tiered filling. The ore from the Apex Mine is produced in a tubular structure that is a gallium and germanium-containing iron oxide mineral with a fair amount of silver, zinc, lead and copper. Strata conditions in and around the ore belt require a distinctive approach. To date, these methods include a diesel scraper (prototype) of 0.5 yd3 (1 yd3 = 0.764 m 3), a 4 ft x 7 ft (1 ft = 0.3048 m) Road using fiber-jet concrete support, and wind cement cement filling, which is the first case in North America. It is crucial that the successful development of this ore body is a product of a combination of new technology and a handful of dedicated workers.
