中国传统儒家知人思想有着身心一体的理论奠基,因而它不把人的内在之“心”与外在之“身”完全分别对待,而更注重透过人的外在身体表现去把握其内在质性。知人思想源起于政治,发展于政治,最终脱离政治而获得独立地位,这是中国知人文化的早期发展形态。到了孔子之时的轴心时代,原先依赖巫、王以相接于天的传统也受到了冲击,人们可以不再向外追寻,而是面向自身,发现自我。这种自我发现使得人对自身的认知达到一个新的高度,发源于政治的知人也就从政治中获得突破,具有了更为深刻的涵义。
