In Danish power plants, the newly developed instrumentation is used to control the carbon content of the fly ash and to operate the burner in a balanced manner. Combining a variety of factors can optimize the combustion in pulverized coal fired boilers. For example, one would expect all burners to operate (evenly) under the same conditions. Information on fly ash combustible content (the most important indicator of combustion efficiency) is an effective means of achieving optimum performance for operators. Boiler operators often only know part of the inlet conditions, but knowing the excess oxygen at the outlet is only indicative of the average air-fuel ratio at the combustion chamber inlet (burner).
