因为特定地理环境与社会环境的制约以及时代条件的限制等,关于契丹人处世方式与价值追求的探索,也只能从今本《辽史》探寻其皮毛而已。契丹人送往迎来的礼仪活动,虽深受辽朝封建礼仪系统的熏染,但仍保留诸多源于民族特点的习俗痕迹。契丹人的家庭观念及其社会表现形式,在辽代仍然保留比较明显的门第观念与豪强政治的色彩。因此,契丹人的社会价值观念体系,就带有比较深刻的“世官”政治的痕迹,但因封建化程度的不断加深,蕃汉地主集团价值追求的基本特点,也逐渐汇聚到植于民族根基的古老天命观形态下、“物竞天择”的哲学范畴。
