One of the hottest tickets in Los Angeles this weekend was a concert by a Japanese pop-culture icon. Her name is Hatsune Miku. Her sold-out show, Mikunopolis, marked her debut in the U.S.

In Japan, Hadiki Kanmochi developed vocaloid at the Yamaha Corporation. Other companies create characters, like Miku, that give the vocaloid technology a more human range. Their voice libraries and Miku shot to fame because fans, and even some professional Japanese artists, popularized her sound library by using software to create songs and videos that went viral. The process does for singing what the keyboard synthesizer does for pianos. In the vocaloid scene, this means a gifted songwriter may not have to rely as much on their own pipes. So far, despite the sold-out concert in LA, the vocaloid style is still an acquired taste.
As the show closed to an encore and sea of waving glow-sticks, this much was clear: the techniques pop 7)ethos of Miku wasn’t just a virtual hit; she was a real one too.
