According to the customs statistics, from January to May 2000, China’s foreign trade volume totaled 174.110 billion U.S. dollars, an increase of 36.1% over the same period of last year. Of this total, the import was 81.826 billion U.S. dollars, up 35.4% over the same period of last year: the export was 92.284 billion U.S. dollars, up by 36.8% over the same period of last year. From January to May 2000, the total value of imports and exports of textiles and clothing in China reached 24.595 billion U.S. dollars, up 36.12% over the same period of last year (the same below), accounting for 14.13% of the total import and export value of the country’s foreign trade. Of which, the total value of imports of textiles and garments was 5.289 billion U.S. dollars, up by 22.65% over the same period of the previous year and accounting for 6.46% of the total value of the country’s total foreign trade.
