Background: About 1/4 of patients with diabetic retinopathy have diabetic retinopathy. The quality of life of patients is severely affected by the serious deterioration of vision. Social support plays an important role in the rehabilitation of patients. Objective: To analyze the relationship between social support and quality of life in patients with diabetic retinopathy to guide clinical practice and improve the quality of life of patients. Design: A cross-sectional study of patients with diabetic retinopathy. Unit: Nanjing Military Region General Hospital Eye Ward. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 81 patients with diabetic retinopathy hospitalized in Nanjing Military Region General Hospital ophthalmic ward from January 2002 to May 2003 were selected. Inclusion criteria: diabetic retinopathy and voluntarily participated in the study; exclusion criteria: those with other complications (hypertension, nephropathy, etc.). According to visual acuity divided into two groups: binocular visual acuity of 0.06 to 0.1 in 28 cases, visual acuity ≤ 0.05 group of 53 cases. Methods: The two groups of patients were investigated and analyzed. Social support for patients with diabetic retinopathy at different visual acuity levels was evaluated from the three dimensions of objective support, subjective support, and utilization. Patients with diabetic retinopathy were assessed by modified quality of life index (MQLI) Quality of life of patients, including five dimensions: physical health, mental health, social function, self-image and material basis. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Social support and quality of life of the patients with diabetic retinopathy, the total score, physical health factor scores, mental health factor scores, social function factor scores and physical basis factor scores and their correlation. Results: The total score of social support, objective support factor, subjective support factor and utilization factor of visual acuity in 0.06 ~ 0.1 group were higher than that of visual acuity≤0.05 group (P <0.01
