康保牧场为丘陵干草原牧区,在河北省啮齿动物地理区划上属张北坝上干草原省。区内有长爪沙土鼠、草原黄鼠、黑线仓鼠、黑线毛足鼠、五趾跳鼠、草原鼠兔、布氏田鼠、狭颅田鼠、北方田鼠、短耳仓鼠、小毛足鼠、草原鼢鼠、鼷鼠和褐家鼠等14种鼠。长爪沙土鼠和草原黄鼠为优势种。黑线仓鼠、黑线毛足鼠和草原鼠兔为常见种。1971到1972年在长爪沙土鼠和草原黄鼠间曾有过鼠疫的暴发流行。此后,每年进行药物灭鼠,长爪沙土鼠和草原
