Objective: To investigate the expression of Slug protein in astrocytoma and normal brain tissue and its relationship with clinicopathological features, and analyze the influence of Slug protein expression on 5-year survival rate of patients. Methods: The expression of Slug protein in 70 cases of astrocytomas and 30 cases of normal brain tissues were detected by immunohistochemistry (En VisionTM) and analyzed statistically. Results: The positive rates of Slug protein in astrocytomas and normal brain tissues were 47.14%, 0 respectively. There was significant difference between the two groups (χ2 = 21.11, P <0.01). The positive expression of Slug protein was not related to the gender, age, tumor diameter and tumor location (P> 0.05), but was related to histopathological grade (P <0.05). The 5-year survival rate of patients with Slug positive expression was 36.36%, negative expression was 75.68%, the difference was statistically significant (χ2 = 11.01, P <0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Slug protein is abnormally expressed in astrocytomas and its overexpression affects the grade of astrocytic tumors and the 5-year survival rate of patients.
