In the article “Practical Casting Technology” (“Modern Casting” December 1981), it was not appropriate to use graphite tubes to introduce gas into aluminum when purging with nitrogen. Experiments have shown that this produces graphite inclusions in the metal. This opinion was drawn experimentally by Brant, Bone and Emley. In their experiments, nitrogen was introduced into the aluminum-magnesium (4%) alloy via a graphite tube for 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 min.
