《喜福会》(The Joy Luck Club)是华裔美国作家谭恩美(Amy Tan)的处女作,讲述了四位华裔母亲与她们女儿之间的故事。“华裔后代”这一身份的特殊性常常使已经是美国公民的女儿们在生活中陷入一种伦理身份选择的困境,认可母亲们的教育方式意味着选择其中国人身份,而渴望融入美国社会的女儿们更加青睐美国人身份,让她们在问题面前通常与母亲的意见背道而驰,双方由此引发了各种矛盾。随着故事的推进,女儿们愈发感觉西式文化并不是自己想象中那么完美,从而重新作出伦理选择,认可母亲的华裔身份并与母亲达成和解。
The Joy Luck Club is a debut by Amy Tan, a Chinese American writer about the story of four Chinese mothers and their daughters. The particularity of the status of “Chinese descendants” often leaves daughters who are already American citizens in a dilemma of ethical identity choice. Recognizing that mothers’ education means choosing their Chinese identity and longing for integration Daughters of American society are more favoring American identity, leaving them to run counter to the mothers’ opinions in the face of problems before they lead to various contradictions. As the story progressed, the daughters became more and more aware that Western culture was not as perfect as their own imagination, thus re-establishing ethical choices, recognizing the mother’s Chinese identity and settling her mother’s.
