The “Golden Triangle” originally referred to the slightly triangular area at the junction of Myanmar, Laos and Thailand. Named after the opium-like substance in the 1960s, the area remains one of the largest bases of opiates in the world today. However, with the collapse of Khosha Group in early 1996, major changes have taken place in the drug trafficking pattern throughout the Golden Triangle. The current “Golden Triangle” has already broken through the original concept. This is mainly manifested in three aspects. The geographical scope of the “Golden Triangle” has changed. The current “Golden Triangle” has been extended to northern Burma, northern Laos and northern Vietnam. The northern edge of the “Golden Triangle” has cling to the border of China’s southwestern continent on-line. The “Golden Triangle” has changed its core drug zone. The original core drug zone was located in the border region of Myanmar and Thailand controlled by Khosha Group. Due to the continuous northward shift of the “Golden Triangle”, the northern region of Myanmar has become the core poison zone of the “Golden Triangle” now.
