It was first recognized in 1916 that zinc is an essential nutrient for animals. It is found in higher concentrations in the prostate, hair, nails, iris and cornea, and in soft tissue in cochlear and vestibular labyrinthine lesions. Henkin first proposed in 1979: zinc deficiency can cause sensorineural hearing loss and taste and olfactory dysfunction. Chronic zinc deficiency can cause many symptoms, in addition to tinnitus, deafness, but also includes poor wound healing, loss of appetite, taste and smell loss, hair loss, night blindness, menstrual disorders, nail cracking and prostatic hypertrophy and other symptoms. The authors describe a 70-year-old zinc-deficient patient who complained of loss of smell for 10 years and was associated with tinnitus
