“啸”是人撮口发出的一种悠长而清脆的声音。东汉许慎在《说文》中这样解释:“啸,吹声也。从口,肃声。”他认为,“啸”是吹气之声,类似于今天的吹口哨。西晋成公绥在《啸赋》里描述道:“动唇有曲,发口成音。”吟啸之风俗较为古老,最早可追溯于《诗经》。《诗经·召南·江有汜》:“江有沱,之子归,不我过,不我过,其啸也歌。”《诗经·小雅·白华》:“啸歌伤怀,念彼硕人。”这两首诗中,女主人公都是借“啸”抒发遭遇遗弃后的痛苦和愤懑之情。
