The organization of Australian scientific research has undergone a major restructuring this week, with Prime Minister Hawke personally addressing science policy. The premier will chair a new agency called the “Science Council,” which meets at least twice a year to discuss important issues in Australian scientific research. The first meeting is scheduled to take place in October this year. The issue is the greenhouse effect. Hawk also appointed a science adviser. Ralf Schlaeder, president of the National Institute of Biological Sciences, National University of Canberra, Australia, will receive the new position of “chief scientist.” Schrader will be executive director of the Science Council and will be directly responsible to Prime Minister Hawke. The Australian government will allocate an additional 390 million Australian dollars in the next five years to develop scientific research and reward researchers.
