历年考古发现的唐代胡人袒腹俑,形象粗犷怪异,姿态独特,其艺术造型一直迷惑不解。本文首次指出胡人袒腹俑不是牵马俑或牵驼俑,而是故意挺肚袒腹露胸表演幻术的外来艺人,也是西域胡人标识性的“胡俗”文化符号。胡人袒腹俑与舞蹈奏乐俑、狞猎骑射俑摆放在一起,证明其具有特殊技艺,他们均穿袍服,手势造型独特,实际是幻术中的手彩戏法,眼神、表情配合着千奇百怪的魔术,并且都应是不受场所限制的即席献艺,有着大众喜闻乐见的表演艺术特征。
