In 1937, I met Mao Zedong in Yan’an’s cave. Later, according to my own interviews with Mao Zedong and interviews with other revolutionary leaders at a crucial juncture in Chinese history, I wrote several books. Nowadays, I am one of the few surviving foreigners who know him and are desperate to record his life and writings. A few years ago I listed a list and wrote a poem that celebrated the nine most venerable figures in history, including Ramses II of Egypt, Salman of France and George of the United States Washington. I wrote it into Mao Zedong. Why? Mao took a decisive role because of the great difficulties he faced in China at that time as well as the ancient patriarchal ideology. Millions of Chinese in rural China have this kind of thinking. Mao Zedong was the only Chinese who changed this idea. Mao Tse-tung indeed changed the thinking of the Chinese! Young soldiers in mainland China obeyed Mao Tse-tung’s command and understood what he said. They are willing to follow him
