The normal corneal stroma is composed of collagen fibers embedded in a special gum. The diameter of these collagen fibers is almost exactly equal. Their arrangement shows a high degree of directivity and forms a ribbon beam, though the major axes in such ribbon beams are not only parallel to each other but also parallel to their surface. The cross section of the ribbon beam shows that the diameter of the fibers is between 20 and 30 mμ. The extremely steep profile shows that there is only a slight change in fiber diameter.
