Traditional ethnic festivals and Intangible Cultural Heritages (ICH) are our treasures of eternity in this changeable era. What’s behind these festivals where the essence of Chinese culture has been revealed in some people and things?
August is a season of lush grass in Xilin Gol and of Nadam Fair. A 65 year old Mongolian artist Mang Lai, a representative inheritor of national ICH program cogur daguu, was singing a famous tune Saint Genghis khan for distinguished guests from afar. As a classic harmonic singing art, its low part cogur is vocal accompaniment and high part is lengthy vocalization. Recently, Mang Lai organized various associations, set up a specialty and launched free training classes for the art to pass down.
Dai Tribute Tea
Like Yang Liping’s famous peacock dance, another name card of Xishuang Banna is Pu’er tea. As tea ancestor, Pu’er tea’s color and taste are determined by processing techniques. In the bright green tea garden, the national representative inheritor of Pu’er tea making Li Xingchang in his 60s displayed the whole process, including sacrifice to tea god, material selection, water-removing, rolling, drying, steaming, and pressing into shape. Mr. Li opened a Tribute Pu’er Tea Training Class in 2009 in his hometown.
Song Festival of Gin Nationality
Gin people have created numerous priceless national treasures; the annual Song Festival is a window to display them. The single-string fiddle entered the national ICH list. Su Chunfa, the representative inheritor of this art, began opening free training classes since 1990s and now he has taught over 300 students, who won various awards at home and abroad.
BMW China Culture Journey has travelled 19 provinces, covering over 14,000 km, and visited 6 cultural and ecological protection exemplary areas and over 150 ICH and offered RMB 6 million for 58 ICH programs and research projects.
