The memorial to the city is an important poem written by Oden, a famous modern poet in Britain. It has complex meanings and profound contents, which have multiple meanings. Perhaps because of this, commenters either treat it in a clumsy way or deal with it, or view it in a corner, often giving a hard-won feeling. Through a careful reading of the text and a review of Oden’s own essay, this article attempts to unveil the unifying theme of this poem: Criticism of the Ideology of Binary Opposition between Mind and Body. Auden believes that the dual opposition to “advocating the spirit and belittling the body” is the main reason for making the wrong choices. For mankind to be saved, it is necessary to go beyond this opposition and reach the perfect city of God.
