艾滋病毒(HIV)的构造电子显微镜观察逆转录病毒的形态,可分为A、B、C、D 四型。A 型逆转录病毒是细胞内的未成熟病毒,无糖蛋白被膜。属于B 型者目前已知有小鼠乳癌病毒(MMTV)。大部分逆转录病毒属于C 型。艾滋病毒(人免疫缺陷病毒,HIV)的直径约100mm,被脂质双重膜外皮所覆盖。在病毒粒子内部可见棒状、稍浓染的部位。此部位是由2分子RNA(病毒核酸)与病毒基因gag 区域所组成的蛋白质(P~(17)、P~(24))及逆转录酶(RT)所形成的复合体,称为核夹膜。HIV 的核夹膜的明显特征是棒状。HIV 目前仍被分类为C 型逆转录病毒。病毒颗粒被膜上有由病毒基因env 区域合成的糖
