艾伦·怀廷(Allen S.Whiting)教授是美国知名的中国问题专家,1926年出生于美国纽约州的帕斯·安伯伊,1948年获康奈尔大学学士学位。怀廷教授在大学期间开始接触中文,毕业后分别于1950年和1952年在哥伦比亚大学获得硕士和博士学位。1951—1953年,他于西北大学担任政治学系的助理教授,由于受麦卡锡主义的席卷,失去工作,随即赴台湾继续学习中文、搜集研究资料。1955年至1957年受聘于密歇根州立大学政治学系,其后直至1961年一直在兰德公司从事研究工作。1960年怀廷教授出版了他的成名作《中国跨过鸭绿江》一书,该书在美国国内产生极大反响,怀廷教授的知名度也随之骤然提升。1961年他被负责远东事务的助理国务卿罗杰·希尔斯曼(Roger Hilsman)直接调到国务院担任肯尼迪政府情报研究司国际关系方面的特别助理,1962年任远东研究分析处处长,供职至1966年。之后,他调任美国驻香港总领事馆副总领事,协助总领事爱德华·赖斯(Edward E.Rice)工作。1968年约翰逊(Johnson)总统卸任后,怀廷教授重返学术界,在密歇根大学担任教授,其间还兼任美中关系国家委员会主席、国家安全委员会顾问,以及美国哥伦比亚广播公司和美国全国广播公司电视台担任关于中国问题的特殊评论员等重要职务。最终于亚利桑那大学退休。
Professor Allen S.Whiting is a well-known American expert on China. Born in Perth, New York, USA, in 1926, he was awarded a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University in 1948. Professor Whiting began to contact with Chinese during his university studies. After graduation, he obtained master’s and doctoral degree from Columbia University in 1950 and 1952 respectively. From 1951 to 1953, he was an assistant professor of political science at Northwestern University. As a result of McCarthyism, he lost his job and went to Taiwan to continue studying Chinese and collecting research materials. From 1955 to 1957, he was employed by the Department of Political Science at Michigan State University and until 1961 was engaged in research at Rand Corporation. In 1960 Professor Whiting published his famous book, “China Across the Yalu River,” a book that produced great repercussions in the United States. Professor Whiting’s popularity also increased suddenly. In 1961, he was directly transferred to the State Department by Roger Hilsman, assistant secretary of state for Far East Affairs, as special assistant in the international relations of Kennedy’s Government Intelligence Research Division. In 1962, he served as director of Far East Research and Analysis Division 1966. Later, he was transferred to the Deputy Consul General of the U.S. Consulate General in Hong Kong to assist Consul General Edward E. Rice. Following the resignation of Johnson in 1968, Professor Whittin returned to academia and was a professor at the University of Michigan, where he also served as chairman of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, consultant for the National Security Council, and CBS and NBCTV As a special commentator on the China issue and other important positions. Finally retired at the University of Arizona.
