In order to investigate the role of abnormal telomerase activity in the development and progression of gastric cancer, the telomerase activity of gastric mucosa was measured by TRAP silver staining method. Results The positive rate of telomerase was 100% (8/8) in gastric cancer. The status organization was 400% (4/10) and superficial gastritis was negative (0/9). The positive rate of gastric cancer was highest (P<0.05 compared with other tissues), while there was no significant difference between pre-gastric conditions and superficial gastritis (P>0.05). It is suggested that telomerase activation is involved in the formation and development of gastric cancer. Detection of telomerase activity may contribute to the early diagnosis of gastric cancer.
