DARPA is implementing two new initiatives to develop infrared signal and millimeter wave signal processing technology. The first is a study of the infrared signal processing techniques required for automatic target acquisition. The emphasis is on sounding and classification algorithms but may also include algorithms for sensor control, image restoration, image compression, tracking and aiming point selection. As part of the infrared processing technology program, ARA intends to conduct a joint project with Army Night Vision and Electro-Optics Laboratories, and some companies will conduct parametric studies on selected algorithms.
