Based on the principle of discharge melting, a practical method of low loss connection to single mode fiber is developed. The self-alignment due to the surface tension when the fiber tip melts is achieved with a simple setup, with average connection losses of 0.4, 0.2 and 0.1 dB for fibers with core diameters of 5.2, 7 and 10 μm, respectively.
