“Dream of Red Mansions” is generally considered to be the greatest Chinese traditional novel. As a comparative literature scholar, I often wonder which Western novel can be juxtaposed with “A Dream of Red Mansions” and read together in what ways. I think Middle Middleseness (1874), one of the greatest English novels of the 19th century, is a Western novel that can be discussed side by side with A Dream of Red Mansions. “Dream of Red Mansions” describes a family, there is a major love story, “Middlemarch” tells a town, there are three love stories. In this article, I will discuss two groups of words in these two novels: how major actors appear, and how elitists use motifs that present negative information as they try to teach their younger generations.
