Long-distance trunk telecommunication systems, especially submarine cable systems, in particular, require reliability. This article describes how InGaAsP inverted-rib waveguide (IRW) lasers that are used as light sources for such single-mode systems by minimizing the well-known degeneration damage are designed. This paper summarizes the results of a number of reliability assurance programs and concludes after seven million hours of life testing that IRW lasers have very good reliability performance. This device is now widely used in terrestrial communications line systems and was first used in submarine fiber optic cable systems between Britain and Belgium.
