被北约称为“江湖”级的国产护卫舰是中国自主设计生产的第一代导弹护卫舰,也是迄今为止中国建造数量最多的护卫舰型号。从20世纪70年代中期首艘建成服役到90年代最后一批交付中国海军,“江湖”级生产数量多达30多艘,在较长一段时间内与“旅大”级驱逐舰一起担负中国海军水面舰队的重要支柱。不过,“江湖”级护卫舰的历史贡献还不仅是在较长一段时间内是中国海军水面舰队的生力军,而且还有多艘先后落户国外,一度成为中国舰船行业大排水量舰艇出口的标志性产品。从80年代中期首批“江湖”Ⅰ改进型交付埃及海军,到几年后具有国际同类产品水准的“江湖”Ⅲ入役泰国海军,中国在国际军用舰船市场上用较短时间就基本走出了所谓廉价、低档阶段,拥有了与该行业传统发达国家展开竞争的能力。“江湖”级的出口也从一个侧面展现了中国舰船业改革开放以来的飞速发展历程。
