If you need any help in planning your future, call in at the Education and Careers Expo, which opened at the HK Convention and Exhibition Centre yesterday. Expo gives you a unique opportunity to meet leading industrialists and educators. This year there are over 150 exhibitors, including businesses, professions and government departments. In addition, there are representatives from over 100 educational institutions, including many from overseas. Don’t miss out on this great chance to get some personal advice directly from the experts.
I spoke to several young people at Expo, and they all agreed how useful it was to have so much expertise and information under one roof.
Duncan Kwong intends to take a university course in design after he leaves school. Duncan, a Form Six student, said, “My mother has a jewellery shop and designs her own jewellery, and I think I take after her.” Duncan was collecting some of the free literature when I spoke to him. “I’ve picked up a lot of college prospectuses and so on, but I’m not in a hurry to make a choice at the moment. I want to get all the information before I make up my mind.”
Barbara Wu is already at university, in the second year of a law degree. She’s decided to keep on studying after she graduates. “I hope that I can go abroad to study,” said Barbara, “but I may not be able to afford it. I applied for several scholarships last year, without any luck. I aim to keep on trying, however.”
One feature of Expo is the careers seminars, at which expert speakers outline their respective fields. Barbara attended a seminar on international law. “The speaker was really good at getting across his message,” said Barbara. “It was very helpful.”
But Expo isn’t just for people who are still in education. It also offers help to those in employment, and to people who are considering retraining or a change of career.
Charles Lee, 21, left school after Form Five and went to work in a factory. “I wanted to help my family by earning a living”, Charles told me. “I took the first job I could find, without much thought. Initially, the salary looked good. But now I realize that I’m in a dead-end job. I wish I’d stayed at school longer. I’m looking at changing my career and perhaps studying to be an accountant, but this time I’m going to get plenty of information and advice. I’ve no intention of making the same mistake twice.”
  56. We could summarize the writer’s attitude towards Expo by saying that she_______.
  A. is quite critical towards it
  B. is very keen and enthusiastic
  C. does not understand its real purpose
  D. feels it could be improved in some ways
  57. We can infer that when Duncan says “I’m not in a hurry to make a choice at the moment” (Para.3), he is probably referring to choosing_______.’
  A. which subject to study at university
  B. whether to go to university or not
  C. which university to go to
  D. whether to pick up more college prospectuses
  58. We can infer that Barbara Wu_______.
  A. does not come from a rich family
  B. is a friend of Duncan Kwong
  C. is not very intelligent
  D. does not work very hard
  59. When Charles says, “I’ve no intention of making the same mistake twice” (Para. 7), he means that he does not intend to_______.
  A. leave school after Form Five again
  B. help his family by earning a living
  C. study to be an accountant
  D. make a decision without careful thought

Parents often believe that they have a good relationship with their teenagers(青少年). But last summer, Joanna and Henry noticed a change in their older son: suddenly he seemed to be talking far more to his friends than to his parents. “The door to his room is always shut,” Joanna noted.
Tina and Mark noticed similar changes in their 14-year-old daughter. “She used to cuddle up(蜷伏) with me on the sofa and talk,” said Mark. “Now we joke that she does this only when she wants something. Sometimes she wants to be treated like a little girl and sometimes like a young lady. The problem is figuring out which time is which.”
Before age 11, children like to tell their parents what’s on their minds. “In fact, parents are first on the list,” said Michael Riera, author of Uncommon Sense for Parents with Teenagers. “This completely changes during the ten years,” Riera explained. “They talk to their friends first, then maybe their teachers, and their parents last.”
Parents who know what’s going on in their teenagers’ lives are in the best position to help them. To break down the wall of silence, parents should create chances to understand what their children want to say, and try to find ways to talk and write to them. And they must give their children a mental break, for children also need freedom, though young. Another thing parents should remember is that to be a friend, not a manager, with their children is a better way to know them.
  60. “The door to his room is always shut” suggests that the son_______.
  A. is always busy with his studies
  B. doesn’t want to be disturbed
  C. begins to dislike his parents
  D. keeps himself away from his parents
  61. Tina and Mark are worried that_______.
  A. their daughter isn’t as lovely as before
  B. their daughter’s mind can’t be read exactly
  C. they don’t know what to say to their daughter
  D. their daughter talks with them only when she needs help
  62. What does the phrase “the wall of silence” in the last paragraph mean?
  A. Teenagers become silent before their parents
  B. Teenagers do not want to understand their parents.
  C. Teenagers talk a lot with their friends.
  D. Teenagers talk little about their own lives.
  63. What should parents do to have a good relationship with their teenagers?
  A. They should do as a manager in a company.
  B. They should do as a close friend.
  C. They should give in to them.
  D. They should give them a lot of mental problems to work out.

As any homemaker who has tried to keep order at the dinner table knows, there is far more to a family meal than food. Sociologist Michael Lewis has been studying 50 families to find out just how much more.
Lewis and his co-workers carried out their study by videotaping(录像) the families while they ate ordinary meals in their own homes. They found that parents with small families talk actively with each other and their children. But as the number of children gets larger, conversation gives way to the parents’ efforts to control the loud noise they make. That can have an important effect on the children. “In general the more question-asking the parents do, the higher the children’s IQ scores,” Lewis says. “And the more children there are, the less question-asking there is.”
The study also provides an explanation for why middle children often seem to have a harder time in life than their siblings(兄弟姐妹). Lewis found that in families with three or four children, dinner conversation is likely to center on the oldest child, who has the most to talk about, and the youngest, who needs the most attention. “Middle children are invisible,” says Lewis. “When you see someone get up from the table and walk around during dinner, chances are it’s the middle child.” There is, however, one thing that stops all conversation and prevents anyone from having attention: “When the TV is on,” Lewis says, “dinner is a non-event.”
  64. What does the phrase “give way” mean?
  A. Go away. B. Make ... come first.
  C. Fail to support. D. Give up.
  65. Why do parents with large families ask fewer questions at dinner because_______.
  A. they are busy serving food to their children
  B. they have to pay more attention to younger children
  C. they are busy keeping order at the dinner table
  D. they are tired out having prepared food for the whole family
  66. By saying “Middle children are invisible” in paragraph 3, Lewis means that middle children_______.
  A. have nothing to say.
  B. are not easily noticed by the family.
  C. are often kept away from the dinner table
  D. find it hard to keep up with other children
  67. Which of the following statements would the writer agree to?
  A. It is important to have the right food for children.
  B. It is a good idea to have the TV on during dinner.
  C. Parents should talk to each of their children frequently.
  D. Elder children should help the younger ones at dinner.

What do Cinderella and most teens have in common? No, it’s not beautiful glass shoes or a pair of bad stepsisters. It’s the good old curfew.
There aren’t many teenagers who are happy when midnight rolls around and it’s time to head home. But having and following a curfew can be your first step to becoming a responsible adult.
“For some teenagers, a curfew isn’t necessary because they are conscientious and make good decisions,” said family expert Dee Tibetan of Orinda, California. “But for some others, curfews can help them manage their time in their teenage lives.”
Strict curfews, though, say 10 pm on a weekend night, can create tension between teenagers and parents. Rules based on lack of communication between parents and teens can cause teens to break their curfews as a form of protest.
Kevin Bradley, a student at Monte Vista High School in Danville, California, said if he had a strict curfew, he might break it. “My curfew used to be 11 pm. Now that seems to be late, but when all your other friends’ curfews are 12-plus, then you would want to stay out, too.”
But there are things teens can do to open up communication and develop trust with their parents. Making an effort to call and say you’re running late, telling your parents beforehand where you’re going and with whom, and telling the truth about your activities are good ways to get a later curfew.
“My parents and I never had an established curfew but I always call to check in. I’m lucky my parents aren’t always on my back (找麻烦) and can trust me. Some of my friends aren’t so lucky,” said Marvel Ley, a student at Mira Monte High School in Orinda, California.
  68. What is the key to dealing with curfew well?
  A. Remember its importance to help you manage your time.
  B. You must learn to make good decisions.
  C. It depends on communication between parents and teens.
  D. Don’t compare yourself with other teens.
  69. What does the family expert mean about a curfew?
  A. A curfew was unnecessary.
  B. A curfew was necessary.
  C. It all depends.
  D. Curfews can make them conscientious.
  70. What does “12-plus” in Para 4 mean?
  A. At 12 pm.
  B. After 12 pm.
  C. Before 12 pm.
  D. Long before 12 pm.
  71. Which of the following is true about Marvel Ley?
  A. He and his parents have a fixed curfew.

Language is a way to communicate with each other. We started to learn language when we were born. However, people are used to speaking their native language, so immigrants are having many problems between the first generation and the second generation because they don’t have the same native language. Also, the second generation is losing their identity. Especially in America, there are many immigrants that came from different countries to succeed in the States. Since they suffer in lots of areas such as getting a job and trying to speak English, they want their children to speak English, not only at school, but also at home in order to be more successful. Because of this situation, their children are losing their identity and, even more, they are ignoring their parents whose English is not very good.
I think most immigrants are trying to preserve their native language in their new country, but this doesn’t help very much in getting a good job. My aunt taught Korean to her children not to help them succeed in the U. S.; she did so, hopefully, to help them establish a Korean identity. Though the second generation is born in the new country, they often get confused about their identity because they look different from others, and also, if they visit their parents’ country, they will probably feel different from other people there too. My cousins told me that when they visited Korea a few years ago, they felt different from other Koreans. They could even feel it just strolling around the street because they wore different clothes and walked differently.
We must realize that language is important and valuable for many reasons. Immigrants should make an effort not to be ignored by their children and to make their children understand their background by teaching them the parents’ language. This is very important, not only for the harmony of the family, but also in helping the second generation establish their identity.
  72. Which is true about the first generation immigrants?
  A. They have lost their identity.
  B. Their children are losing their identity.
  C. Their children speak different languages.
  D. They cannot speak their native language.
  73. My aunt taught her children Korean .
  A. so that they knew they were of Korean origin
  B. so that they would be more successful in the U. S.
  C. because she didn’t want them to speak English
  D. because she wanted them to respect her
  74. What differences did the writer’s cousin find in their parents’ country?
  A. They behaved quite differently.
  B. They couldn’t understand his language.
  C. They had different facial appearance.
  D. They spoke different languages.
  75. According to the text, what is important and valuable to immigrants?
  A. Self-confidence.
  B. The harmony of the family.
  C. The native language.
  D. Helping the second generation establish their identity.
