孔子认为理想人格的生成要经历“兴于诗、立于礼、成于乐”三个阶段。“兴于诗”关注本真生命的显发与张扬及个体生命之间的感应与交流。“立于礼”则强调生命成长中的自我制约,以实现道德人格的挺立。在“成于乐”阶段,“质”(本真生命)与“文”(礼乐规范)达到了和谐,音乐作为形式美与精神内涵之美的统一,象征着儒家理想人格的极境——圣贤境界。原始儒家的审美教化思想在孔子对这三阶段的描述中得到了完美表达。

As a unity of the beauty of form and spirit, music symbolizes Confucian ideal Personality extreme environment - the realm of saints. The primitive Confucian aesthetic education thought has been perfectly expressed in these three stages of Confucius’ description.
