《密勒氏评论报》,美国人在中国创办的资格最老的一份英文周报;著名记者埃德加.斯诺1928年来华后供职的第一家媒体;公开发表毛泽东身世、言论及照片的首家媒体;报道1927年大革命失败后“红色中国”内幕的首家媒体;因“反日侵华”立场洋主编遭迫害的首家国外媒体;新中国成立后在上海继续出版的英文报刊。该报自创刊至抗战被停,历经二任主编,始终秉承“独立客观”的新闻专业理念,对推行美国对华政策、向西方介绍中国、记录中国革命历程以及促进中西文化交流发挥了重要作用,实现了美国的政治意图与中国社会现实的相互协调。本文的兴趣也正在探究自1917年创刊至1941年停刊期间,该报报道理念的来源和内容,为了解外报眼中的中国以及探究该报的新闻史价值提供参考。
