Preface This test is to study the relationship between wheel wear, carbon content and hardness. Experimental work by the American Railway Association wheel, axle, bearing and lubrication committee cooperation. This is because the number of hot-cracked and overheated wheels has risen sharply since 1978. One recommended measure to reduce hot wheel cracks is to reduce the carbon content of wheels. This means reducing the carbon content of non-heat-treated U-shaped wheels, and Type B instead of Type C for heat-treated wheels. This change may increase the wheel wear and increase the sensitivity of the wheel metal stripping. These factors must be fully recognized before the chemical composition of the wheel changes.
