Objective: To compare the antihypertensive effects and safety of perindopril and captopril in the elderly with essential hypertension. Methods Sixty elderly essential hypertension patients were randomized to receive perindopril (4-8 mg / d) and captopril (37.5-75.0 mg / d) (n = 30 each) for 4 weeks. Results: The total effective blood pressure of perindopril and captopril were 90.0% and 86.7%, respectively (P> 0.05). Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring was 95.0% and 65 respectively. 0% (P <0.05). CONCLUSION: Perindopril is effective and safe in the treatment of senile essential hypertension and is superior to captopril in reducing nocturnal diastolic pressure.
