In 1988, a fire destroyed part of the Chiado neighborhood of Lisbon’s historic center. After the disaster, the Portuguese architect Alvaro Cesar outlined the blueprint for the full restoration of his history. Part of the project is the reconstruction of the Chiado Warehouse, a large complex that has witnessed the glorious history of the various stages of architecture and function since the 20th century. It used to be a monastery, also served as city guard headquarters. In 1835, the building fell into the hands of the merchant Manuel dos Santos, also known as the Marquis de Pompano, who saw part of the building as a private property and the rest leased for shops and hotels.
