西奥多·德莱赛(1871-1945)是二十世纪美国最重要的作家之一。他的自然主义写作风格开创了美国文学的新纪元,《嘉莉妹妹》被公认为是德莱塞自然主义作品中的杰作。在《嘉莉妹妹》这部作品中,德莱赛以亲身经历及对社会的细致观察刻画了一个受金钱,名誉和社会地位等利益驱使并采用各种手段来追逐欲望的人物形象—嘉莉妹妹。笔者从这部小说产生的社会背景和德莱赛的生活经历出发,帮助读者更好地理解嘉莉不断升级的欲望。并分析摇椅这一意象,并且重点解读嘉莉不断升级的欲望。从三个方面对嘉莉妹妹不断升级的欲望进行分析,并劝导人们尤其是广大年轻朋友,正确对待心中欲望并以适当方法加以利用,从而实现自己的理想。
Theodore Dresser (1871-1945) was one of the most important American writers in the twentieth century. His naturalist style of writing opens up a new era in American literature, and Sister Carrie is widely recognized as a masterpiece in Dresser’s naturalistic work. In “Sister Carrie” this work, Dresser with personal experience and careful observation of the society depicts a character driven by the interests of money, reputation and social status and the use of various means to chase the desire - Carrie younger sister. Based on the social background of this novel and the life experience of Dresser, the author helps readers to understand Carrie’s escalation of desire. And analyze the image of rocking chair, and focus on the interpretation of Carrie’s escalation of desire. Analyze the escalating desire of Sister Carrie from three aspects, and persuade people, especially young friends, to correctly handle their desires and use them in an appropriate way so as to realize their own ideals.
