西林教案是在太平天国期间发生的,它与这个时期清朝政府的基督教政策有着密切的关系。太平天国是以拜上帝教来发动、组织和领导的,而拜上帝教主要来源于基督教,与基督教十分相似,以至于清廷认为拜上帝教就是基督教,所以,加强对基督教的控制与防范,实行严格的限教政策,政教关系极为紧张。法国传教士马赖这一时期进入广西西林传教不能不引起误会,使当地官员认为是组织群众造反,因此,遭到逮捕并处死,导致了教案的发生。
The case of Xilinism happened during the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom and was closely related to the Christian policy of the Qing government during this period.
