Peter Svensson, a technology writer, recently wrote an interesting essay titled, “Does the video rip the Internet?” (An article by the Associated Press on May 17, under the pessimists mentioned below, Editor’s Note). From a technical point of view, there are indeed many factors worth considering. If there is a large number of users watching TV on the Internet, the demand will be gradually increased, especially in the increasingly popular HDTV today. What pessimists and some telecommunications operators see is an increase in bandwidth resulting from increased costs; optimists think that various technologies can drastically improve network capabilities and provide better video services, and the cost of technology will drop . History will prove that the optimist’s point of view is correct.
