Cable characterization software simplifies both installation and testing of fiber optic cable systems. These two problems are to calculate the cable bandwidth and determine the attenuation correction value according to the wavelength of the light source. Fiber-optic cable bandwidth may be a real issue for multi-mode fiber-based high-speed fiber networks and links. Unfortunately, most fiber optic manufacturers and bandwidth testers can only test for modal dispersion without measuring in-mold dispersion, a major issue with LED-based fiber systems. A good approximation of the line bandwidth can be obtained by calculating the following known line factors: the wavelength and spectral width of the LED light source, the optical fiber bandwidth specified by the laser test, and the line length. The typical error for this calculation is 11%.
