A team from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has tackled two of the biggest issues blocking the standardization of 56Kbps modems and is likely to approve common specifications next month. Earlier this month, a subsidiary of the International Telecommunication Union voted through a compromise proposed by Intel Corp. at a conference in Orlando, Florida, that called for the use of 3Com’s mapping technology and Motorola’s spectral shaping technology. In September, the ITU failed to address the controversial issue of which spectral shaping and mapping technology to implement in the standards. This decision is a breakthrough for the 56Kbps standard. For months, the standard has been divided between two incompatible camps: 3Com’s x2 technology
