In 1938, Bulgaria had a total installed power capacity of 130,000 kilowatts and a per capita annual electricity consumption of 42 degrees. According to this indicator, Bulgaria is one of the most backward areas in Europe. Poor lignite is Bulgaria’s main energy source. Its reserves are quite rich, if converted into a standard fuel, accounting for 82% of the total reserves of coal. Anthracite and lump coal reserves are small, basically free of oil and natural gas. Lignite is concentrated in Eastern Mali, Western Mali and Sofia coal fields. The coal of the Bobadovsky coalfield has a thermal efficiency of 2600-3110 kcal / kg. Coal production has increased year by year: 3.565 million tons in 1945; 10.047 million tons in 1955; 26.212 million tons in 1965; 28.92 million tons in 1975: 33.512 million tons in 1982.
