In a prospective observational study, elderly patients with type 2 diabetes who consumed omega-3 fatty acids, as well as two-week fish oil, significantly reduced the risk of diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy is one of the major causes of vision loss in the elderly. Its pathogenesis is not fully understood, but inflammation, oxidative stress and microvascular changes play an important role in the deterioration of retinal function. The long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids are present in the retina, while long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids form oxylipins, which are anti-inflammatory and anti-angiogenic. The study followed 3,614 type 2 diabetic patients (mean age 67 years) in primary care centers in Spain to investigate whether diet supplemented with omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids affects diabetic
