中国文化发源于黄河流域(北纬35度附近)而甘蔗却适宜在气候温热多雨的北纬27度以南地区生长繁殖,所以中国夏、商、周(公元前2、100~前841年)文字上没有出现关于甘蔗的记载,但谁也不能肯定温热多雨的南部地区,那时就不长甘蔗。到了战国时代(始于公元前475年)处于长江流域的楚国已有甘蔗的文字记载。远在西汉(公元前206~8)东汉(公元25~220)三国(公元221~280)等朝代都有我国人民生产糖浆,糖蜜,晶糖和冰糖的文字记载,这些历史事实都是在唐太宗于公元647年派人去摩揭陀国取熬糖法之前出现的,所以甘蔗和制糖法由印度传入中国之说是难予置信的。
