潘泰(Panthay)一词(或译藩泰),系19世纪末驻缅泰及印度等东南亚国家的英国殖民官员及入滇探险考察的西方探险家大量使用,以专指清末的云南回民反清起义者,以及起义被镇压后出逃到上述地区的滇籍回回穆斯林,从而使之成为了一个具有特定涵义的历史术语,并进入到当时的英、法等西洋文字文献中。关于该术语之由来,曾引起当时的西方观察家及后来研究这段历史的东西方学者的长期争论,虽有仁有智,但始终是聚论纷纭而莫衷一是。本文著者林长宽教授系台湾政治大学学者,藉负笈英伦亚伯丁大学宗教研究中心专研伊斯兰文化专业博士学位,主攻云南回族伊斯兰教历史文化之机以英文撰成此文,博采众说，指点良荡，追根索源，从语源学（Etyin。lOgical）角度，对之作了独到而精眸的探研。文咸之后，刊发在1991年7月英国伦敦出版的英文权威杂志《穆斯林少数民族事务研究所学报公（humal，Institute of Mush。 Minority Affairs， Vol： 12： 2，July，1991）卷12第2赐上。最近，蒙林君自海峡彼岸惠寄原作，并函嘱余为之论译发表，以飨大陆学界同好，故有此拙译。原文中引到三处法文，系请原帽真锋报》编辑之一的云南省图书谊外文部沙德诊前辈代译。初稿译毕，又复台北，承林君忙中抽暇，亲作校核，纠正了许多错谬，始成斯文?
The word “Panthay” (Panthay), a British colonial official stationed in Southeast Asia such as Myanmar, Thailand and Thailand at the end of the 19th century, is heavily used by Western explorers who travel in Yunnan for an exploration of anti-Qing The insurgents, as well as the Hui nationalites who fled to these areas after the suppression of the uprising, returned to Muslims, making it a historical term with a specific meaning and entering the then Western literary texts such as English and French.
