时间连词when是英语中使用频率高、多义的连词之一。它连接的主从句既可以表达相继或同时发生的时间关系,也经常用来指称对比、条件、原因、让步等抽象概念。本文尝试运用隐喻、图形/背景等认知理论,探讨英语时间连词多义性存在的认知基础,以期对其作出更合理解释,并据此讨论对外语教学的启示。
Time conjunction is one of the most frequently used polysemy conjunctions in English. It connects the main clauses can not only express the relationship between the successive or simultaneous time, but also often used to refer to abstract concepts such as contrast, conditions, causes, concessions. This thesis attempts to explore the cognitive basis of polysemy in English time conjunctions with the help of cognitive theories such as metaphor, graph / background, and so on, in order to make a more reasonable explanation for it and discuss the implications for foreign language teaching accordingly.
