艺术机构在对艺术品的认定中具有重要作用。美国分析美学家阿瑟·c.丹托认为,博物馆利用它的筛选机制在实际上承担了艺术定义的功能,在已经成熟的博物馆体制背后,隐藏着一整套定义艺术的法则,传统博物馆一方面表征了传统艺术存在的样式,另一方面体现了传统的艺术认定方式。然而先锋艺术的全新实践,特别是在日常生活用品纳入艺术范畴以后,使得博物馆无法死守固有法则而无视鲜活的艺术样式的出现,在这样的前提下,丹托提出了超博物馆的概念,从而延伸和拓展了博物馆的内涵和外延,使得博物馆能够持续回应不断翻新的艺术实践。
