书法史上论及宋代书法,素有“苏、黄、米、蔡”四大书家的说法,比及苏、黄、米三家,蔡襄的特殊性是在书法史上都有目共睹的,但是蔡襄在书法史上着实也扮演着很重要的角色,他的书法作品虽然没有后来苏、黄、米三家所倡导的“尚意”书风的自然脱俗,但他结束了五代战乱时期书坛的混乱局面,也对以往书家进行了系统的学习与继承,可以说蔡襄的意义是继往有余而开来不足。
