北方多平原旷野,故利于车马;南方多江河湖泊,故利于舟楫。在原始社会,我们的祖先已懂得砍下大树,将中间挖空作舟,作为行驶江河的交通工具。甲骨文中多次出现“舟”的象形字,以此可以为证。到春秋战国时期,东南沿海的吴国、越国都已有专设的“船宫”作为造船工场,船舶的种类和数量都大为增加,商船和战船已经分开。公元前482年,越国攻吴,水军沿海北上,然后进入淮水与吴军作战。据史载,当时的战船已有大翼、小翼、突冒、楼船、桥船、余皇等名称。其中“大翼”长23米,宽3.5米,可载桨手士兵等共93人;“小翼”亦长20.7米,宽2.8米。有一年冬天,吴越在太湖里交战,战船成百,吴国靠了“不龟(皲)手之药”击败了越国。
