Research on UV-visible Light Properties of CeO_2 and Y_2O_3 Nanoparticles

The properties of UV-visible light of rare earth oxides CeO2 and Y2O3 nanoparticles with different diameters were researched and the results shows that the absorption values of CeO2 nanoparticles increase as the diameters of CeO2 nanoparticles decrease in 200~800 nm and have a peak of absorption value between 230 and 500 nm. The absorption values of CeO2 nanoparticles with 20 nm and 30 nm diameter are respectively 76% and 67% but the absorption value of CeO2 with 3 μm diameter is only 4% at 0.125 mg·ml-1 in 200~800 nm. The more the concentrations of CeO2 solution, the less the absorption values of CeO2 nanoparticles, but the absorption values of CeO2 with 3μm diameter do not change in 200~800 nm. The absorption values of Y2O3 nanoparticles decrease as the diameters decrease but they have no special peak of absorption in 200~800 nm. The absorption values of Y2O3 nanoparticles with 20 and 50 nm diameter are from 95% to 81% and from 75% to 52% but absorption values of Y2O3 with 3 μm diameter is from 47% to 43% in 200~400 nm at 0.125 mg·ml-1. The changes of absorption values are small in 400~800 nm. The more the concentration of solution, the less the absorption values of Y2O3 in 200~800 nm. There are the scattering of light on the surface of nanoparticles in CeO2 and Y2O3 solution because of the different diameters and the light scattering influence the absorption of nanoparticles in the range of UV-visible light. When the diameters of CeO2 nanoparticles change from 20 to 30 nm the absorption values of smaller nanoparticles have a 1nm blue immigration in ultra violet light region.
