  1.The objective of this research was to develop a moisture control in microporous materials such as the gas diffusion layers (GDLs) of PEFCs.At the cathode, oxygen is transported from the gas channel through the GDL to the catalyst layer.The moisture that forms on the catalyst layer as a result is evacuated into the gas channel in the opposite direction of oxygen transport.Such mass transport in the GDL mainly takes the form of gas diffusion, the characteristics of which substantially affect the power generation performance of a PEFC.In this study, the configuration of new type GDL, in which two kinds of porous media having different wettability are arranged alternately (Hybrid type GDL), was proposed for controlling moisture distribution in GDSs.2.Simultaneous experiments of water distribution and oxygen diffusivity To improve the oxygen diffusion characteristics, the hybrid GDLs were examined.The oxygen diffusivity was measured while simultaneously imaging the moisture distribution in a GDL using a galvanic cell oxygen absorber apparatus and X-ray CT imaging.The higher performance of oxygen diffusivity was shown for the Hybrid type GDL, because oxygen diffusion paths formed at the boundary between two adjacent materials with different wettability.The pores formed near the boundary between the hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions and readily at the boundary because the hydrophilic region drew water from the hydrophobic region.It was shown that the Hybrid GDLs had higher oxygen diffusivity than the carbon paper GDL with a uniform wettability.
